This exhibition presents the manifold dimensions
of Alexandre Alexeïeff, artist, image-maker,
filmmaker and inventor, from the engravings of
the 20s to the "totalisations" used
in his advertising films, and of course including
his invention of animated engraving with the
pin screen designed and finally produced in the
early 30s with Claire Parker. A model of this
singular working tool is exhibited for the first
time since 1975, date of the last Alexeïeff
exhibition at the Annecy Musee-Château.
The exhibition also brings together several rare
and original works as well as hitherto unseen
reproductions, grouped thematically: engraving,
book illustrations, pin-screen animation, the
totalised animations, the animated advertising
films. Several photographic reproductions and
unseen photomontages were specially created,
including the sequence made by Alexeïeff
and Parker for Orson Welles’ "The
Trial", a life-size "Nose", all
based on the creator’s original photo-engravings,
and also several valuable books illustrated with
original engravings, film extracts on video,
objects, working tools, film stills, posters,
photos, manuscripts.
A
book, "Alexeïeff,
itinéraire
d'un Maître", an anthology of analytical
articles about his work and biographical material,
edited by Giannalberto Bendazzi, is available for
sale. (Editions Dreamland, Paris). A touring version
of this exhibition is available for hire from Cinedoc.
