  UN CABINET D'AMATEURS

Monthly programmes at the Cinemathèque Française

February 1993 – June 1995

Films that bypass film history and provide new ways of seeing. These programmes aim to re-introduce the tradition of programming films made by and for amateurs, those non-conformists who like and “cultivate an art (or science) for their own pleasure”, giving rise to films and reflections that “excite” the senses and the intellect, giving movement to vision and the spirit.
The Cabinet d’Amateurs is an opportunity, slipping and sliding between several view-points, to see afresh films that comprise a history that is still to be constituted, which, as with the experimental science of the 18th century, experimental love and the experimental novel of the 19th century, in their combination offer both a chance to view, survey, and food for thought. The amateur of centuries past foreshadowed the collector of the 20th century. Indeed a film collection can exist immaterially, in our minds, via infinite reverberations through time, finding, revealing, bringing to light connections, problematics, with no concern for any form of categorisation: genres, films, whether made for audiences large or small, long and short, early and contemporary films, giving house room to films both welll-known and those neglected, unknown and stirring into life in our imaginary museum, in our internal viewing chambers.
