Rock featured in a number of experimental films in
San Francisco in the early 1960s, and then in
New York. Their joint development was the basis
for a complete change in the form of experimental
films: the simple collage of rock songs, one
after another over the flow of images, with no
predetermined relationship had a dynamite-like
effect on the films’ pacing; envelopping
and intense pop rhythms were in turn revved up
the conjunction of images into ironic and off-kilter
propositions.
The first programme Rock on Films focuses on complete
musical accompaniments that in themselves were
to refresh experimental film form in the 60s. The
soundtracks feature Little Peggy March, The Parris
Sisters, Andy Arthur and T.Rex.
The second programme Rock for Films comprises soundtracks
composed specifically for experimental films: those
of Mick Jagger for Kenneth
Anger, Delired Cameleon Music for Pierre
Clémenti, The Velvet Underground
for Andy Warhol…
The third programme, Rock & Films, features
rare work by the Residents who made their own films
to their own music, as well as French and American
versions of recorded live concerts from the 70s
and 80s: Chapman Withney, Tokow Boys and finally,
contemporary and 70s-80s rock such as that of Pascal
Humbert and Sid Vicious from 2000.
