In 1969, the
New York based Steina and Woody Vasulka, of Icelandic
and Czechoslovak origin respectively, began their
first explorations of video, fully aware of the
new space-time relationships the electronic image
produced. From black and white to colour, initial
studies of video feed-back to the generation of
images through sound and vice versa, from analogue
synthesis to digital treatment in real time, they
maintained a rigour of approach, with each successive
tape revealing a creative force that was commensurate
with the conditions facing artists of the 20th
century in the technological visual arts.
Producing new forms and effects specific to the electronic
image, and achieving exceptional visual results,
the Vasulkas thus developed the tools they needed
for their productions and the apparatus for their
presentation.
"
In short, a dazzling use of the medium" (M.
La Bardonnie –
Le Monde).
Indispensable for anyone who, regardless of current
fashion, wants to understand and appreciate the electronic
image, from its very foundations up until "The
West", a truly electronic "Western" on
the process of vision.
