Walter  Ruttmann

Born in 1887 in Frankfurt, studied painting, and was a lieutenant in the German army during the 1914-1918 war. After the war, he claimed that painting no longer had any meaning, apart from animating paint. He began experimenting with animation techniques and made one of the very first "abstract films": Opus I (1919-1921) followed by Opus II, III and IV (1921-25). He then turned to editing and documentary film, directing, notably, "Berlin : Symphony of a City" in 1927, "Accaiao" (Steel) in 1932. He worked on a number of Fritz Lang films (special effects on the Niebelungen I), Lotte Reiniger (effects and sets for The Adventures of Prince Achmed) and Leni Riefenstahl (editing, Olympia, 1936). He died in 1941 in Berlin.
